The Shepard family papers contain correspondence between members of the Shepard and Marshall families and business records of Sidney Shepard & Co. during the 1870's and 1880's. Also included are essays, short stories, and financial records produced by Ralph Shepard while he attended Harvard University.

The Shepards were a prominent New York State family who resided in Buffalo during the middle and later parts of the 19th century. Sidney Shepard founded a hardware merchandising firm in Buffalo during the 1830's and eventually acquired a factory that produced stamped tinware.
